Mixtape Monday: The Descendants

I don't know what it is about The Descendants, but I just am in love with it (I saw it in theaters once and have rented it twice, finally ordering it on Amazon). It's a perfect mix of George Clooney, beautiful Hawaiian scenery, and great acting. The film does a good job of incorporating both humor and drama with lots of depth, there are no cheap laughs or cries because the script and acting is so genuine and honest.
The soundtrack supports the film with Hawaiian artists, whose music is simultaneously jovial and sad, much like the movie itself. Since all the music is entirely in Hawaiian, I'm not even sure what they are singing about, yet it still evokes emotions. The soundtrack has been my bittersweet summer playlist.
This week's mix tape is inspired by movie, riddled with songs from the soundtrack:

1. 'Ulili E - Dennis Kamakahi
2. The Book of Morris Johnson - Zee Avi
3. Ocean - A Fight for Love
4. Ka Makani Ka'ili Aloha - Gabby Pahinui
5. Unattainable - Little Joy
6. Auwe - Ray Kane
7. He'eia - Gabby Pahinui and The Sons of Hawaii
8. Sea of Love - Cat Power
9. Hi'ilawe - Gabby Pahinui
10. Somewhere Over the Rainbow - Israel Kamakawiwo Ole'
11. Lullaby - Jack Johnson
12. I Should Have Known Better - She & Him
13. I Love You, Awesome - The Phoenix Foundation

  1. I loved "The Descendants" too. It ended up being one of the best films of 2011- heartfelt, honest, and perfect blend of comedy and drama. Usually, that's a pretty popular genre in Hollywood, but last year was all masturbatory odes to old Hollywood and technology, so TD felt particularly raw and potent by contrast. And it's one of the few movies where George Clooney starts off at a loss as opposed to usually having his life together and being, well, George Clooney haha.
