Life Lately

What my life has looked like lately and it sounds a lot like a journal you have to write when it's back to school and the teacher wants to know what you did this summer.

I saw Jenny Lewis perform TWICE this summer, once with her band NAF at an intimate venue, and another at the beautiful Chicago theater on her 10th Anniversary Tour of Rabbit Fur Coat. The concert with NAF was awesome because they performed in the middle of the room with everyone surrounding them. I was arm's length from her and she looked deep into my soul and sang about peace and love. Her concert with the Watson Twins was everything. Since the last time they were on tour promoting the album in 2006 I was in high school and the concert was on a school night, finally seeing them live, performing the album from start to finish, was very emotional for me. I cried. It was beautiful and joyous.
Oh, and I finally went to my first proper Chicago rooftop party (unrelated to Jenny).

I went home last weekend to host a bridal shower/bachelorette for one of my best friends Victoria. Since she spent part of med school in New Orleans (and my family is from there) we had a Mardi Gras themed shower with beads, a king cake, jambalaya and even a second line. The same night her sisters and I threw her a bachelorette that I'm pretty sure no one will forget, even if they really want to ;) It was fun and I love her and my seeeeesters (her sisters) and my high school friends. (I made us all flower crowns to wear in leiu of the typical matching shirts, people on the street kept saying Aloha to us. All materials bought from the Dollar Store!)

My parents came in town for a long weekend to see one of my Real Housewives of Improv shows. We interviewed my mom about New Orleans (her fave). I'm really lucky that they support me and my dreams. They are the best.
While they were here we ate poke, my dad fixed my AC, and we went to the Art Institute.

Went to Michael's parents house in Milwaukee a couple times this summer. It's a nice change of pace when we go. A good time to relax and reset and come back to Chicago energized and hungry for the dream. For the 4th we went to Pleasant Lake. It was pleasant and chill:)

Fall is here! And I couldn't be happier!

Countdown till Christmas {Paperless Post}

September 15th marks 100 days till Christmas! I've teamed up with Paperless Post to bring you my holiday check-list and tips essential to avoiding holiday stress later on. I've definitely been one who is scrambling last minute and buying mediocre gifts because I waited too late. This year I want to enjoy the season.

> Last year I made all my friends the same handmade gift - these gem soaps. They were a hit and we're really fun to make (soap is really fun to cut, there's something very satisfying by the way it glides). I guarantee you that anyone in your life will appreciate something you made yourself over a last minute afterthought gift.

> This year I have already planned out my girlfriend's gifts - but I am keeping it a secret since some of them read my blog. I will say that it's very 90's theme. To avoid stress and spending a lot of money at once, I've already started buying the supplies from Michaels 40% off every week. I think it'll be better to budget this way and won't be a shock come December. I plan to start crafting them in November.

> I don't host Thanksgiving, so I've gotten in the habit of decorating for Christmas right before Turkey Day so that I can enjoy it for a good month. Otherwise I'll just put it off.

> Instead of shipping out-of-town friends gifts, I send kitchy Christmas cards. Paperless Post has a sweet collection of Christmas cards - paper and electronic! I personally am a fan of the Rifle Paper Co. collection they have.

Hope these tips helped! We're all still trying to figure it out together, right?
What tips DO YOU have?

Seasons Change

As America celebrates the unofficial end of summer today, we are reminded of the seasons to come (and Pumpkin Spice Lattes). I live for the in-between, the Autumns and Springs, that bring a change of weather and attitude right when you need it. I guess the same can be applied to creativity too. Autumn can bring a crisp, new look into your work, Spring can inspire and give hope. I'm speaking metaphorically of course, but the point is, which is something I constantly have to remind myself, is that nothing in nature blooms all year. We all need those dormant times when we are not producing as much, aren't inspired, doing anything but art (i.e. paying bills, working out, going to weddings). Because in the Spring (or Autumn) it will all bloom and pour out. Creativity and ideas never go away, they just sleep for the winter sometimes.

So I reassure myself:
Don't be hard on yourself. Be patient with yourself. Remember there's only one Beyonce, but there's also only one you.
